Walk into any nail bar and the menu can feel like a quiz you did not study for. Gel, builder gel, dip, Gel-X, acrylic, hard gel. They all look shiny on the first day. The real differences show up in week two, and when it is time to take them off.

Classic gel manicure
Gel polish is a thin, flexible color that cures under an LED lamp in 30 to 60 seconds per coat. It is applied on your natural nail and is the best choice if you like short to medium nails, want lots of color options and prefer a service under an hour.

Gel is ideal for first-timers and anyone who changes colors often. It is not the best fit if your natural nails are very thin or bendy, because flexible nails can cause flexible gel to crack at the stress point.
Dip powder
Dip powder builds color and strength through layers of bonding resin and finely milled powder, hardened with an activator. There is no lamp. The result is thicker and more rigid than gel, which makes it great for people who are hard on their hands.

One important note on hygiene: at some salons, fingers are dipped straight into a shared jar of powder. We never do that. Our artists pour powder over each nail from a single-use cup so the jar stays clean. If you try dip elsewhere, it is worth asking how they apply it.
Gel-X extensions
Gel-X is a full-cover soft gel tip that is sized for each nail, filled with gel adhesive and cured in place. It is the fastest way to add length without the weight or odor of acrylic. Because the tips are pre-shaped, every nail comes out consistent, which is why Gel-X is so popular for almond and coffin shapes.

What about nail health?
None of these services damage nails on their own. Damage comes from aggressive filing of the natural nail, drilling into the nail plate and peeling products off at home. At Velour we never drill the natural nail, we soak everything off gently and we finish every removal with cuticle oil. If you are taking a break between sets, a classic manicure with a strengthening base is a great reset.
